Bairro Alto, the epicenter district of bohemian life in Lisbon
It is a quiet traditional neighborhood during the day and a venue of the nightlife in Lisbon, as the night begins
The Bairro Alto was established in 1513 and is an ancient and picturesque neighborhood in the center of Lisbon, which by night turns into a paradise for night owls. This neighborhood is part of the parish Misericórdia and is characterized by narrow, cobbled streets, the old houses and the traditional trading. In 2010 it was classified as a Set of Public Interest (CIP).
But mainly from the 80's Bairro Alto is synonymous with nightlife. The best known area of Lisbon nightlife has numerous bars, restaurants and fado houses. As most bars are relatively small, people end up spreading the narrow streets with the glass in their hand, creating a very unique environment, just like a street festival.
This neighborhood is very peaceful and traditional during the day,by night turning into a meeting point, bringing together different urban tribes. It is also known as the place of usual concentration of Erasmus students who are in Lisbon. Part of the Bairro Alto buildings have been restored in recent years, which allowed the installation of new stores, from reference shops and ateliers to tattoos piercing shops.
Because of the recent works that have been undertaken in the area and the installation of surveillance cameras on the streets, and more law enforcement, Bairro Alto is becoming safer. We advise you to visit this area of Lisbon at night and part of the bohemian life of Lisbon, as a true location.
