Christmas Lights Will Be On As Of Next Week

Christmas Lights in Lisbon

This year's investment in holiday lighting has doubled

The lighting of Christmas illumination in the Portuguese capital will take place on November 22nd. This year, investment in lighting in Lisbon, which ranges between 600 and 700 thousand euros, doubled compared to last year, where only 320 thousand euros were spent. Expenditure on lighting is therefore close to pre-crisis figures, before 2008, when between 900 thousand euros and one million euros were spent.

The reason to redouble spending on holiday lights is tourism. The goal is that the lighting of this year is alligned with the status that the city has today, the best European city for city breaks. In all, two million low-consumption LED lamps illuminate 34 avenues, streets and squares of the capital. Most installation of the lights is already completed, there just some avenues and arteries of the capital missing.

There will also be two giant Christmas trees, one at Praça do Comércio and another at Praça do Rossio. The calendar of events leading up to Christmas has also been strengthened and brings innovations. There will also be Christmas markets throughout the city and, from the 26th November on, Christmas events and concerts in the Lisbon neighborhoods will start taking place.
