8 Million People to See the Pope

In September, the number of hotel reservations for May 2017 has already exceeded the total reservations made in 2015

 

The president of Tourism Center, Pedro Machado, predicts that Fatima will receive eight million visitors in 2017, on the occasion of the centenary of the apparitions, which will count on the visit of Pope Francisco. "In 2015 the Shrine was visited by six million two hundred thousand people, a figure that rose up to seven million this year. With the centenary celebrations of the apparitions, marked by the visit of His Holiness, we will certainly reach eight million." said the president of the Lusa agency.

As soon as the Presidency of the Republic confirmed the visit of Pope Francisco to Fatima, on May 12 and 13, 2017, on the occasion of the centenary of the apparitions, Turismo Centro began promoting the destination for religious tourism on flights to Brazil, operated by TAP and Solférias. All flights will feature a video to promote the sanctuary and the region, in the context of the Pope's visit.

The Tourism Centre will make an agreement with the Chamber of Ourem and Ourem Fatima Business Association to launch a tourist guide to national and foreign operators. According to the president of Turismo Centro, this is a measure in the destination promotion plan, which will involve more than 500 operators.

Although the year 2017 has not begun, the tourist arrival to Fatima is foreseen as massive, and the available data, points to a 100% occupancy rate in hotels In September, the value of hotel bookings for May next year is already higher than the total of the reservations made in 2015.
