The best beaches near Lisbon

Did you knowthat Lisbon is the only European capital with Atlantic beaches?

1. Praia das Maçãs

2. Praia de Carcavelos

3. Praia de Galapos

4. Costa da Caparica

1. Praia das Maçãs

Legend has it that its name oginated from apples arriving to the beach at Ribeira de Colares which flows into the beach. Praia das Maçãs is quite busy in the summer, it has a wide beach that at this time is taken advantage of to practice various sports and has a sea with plenty of waves, ideal for surfing. This beach is particularly popular with those who live nearby and it is accessible from the town of Sintra, by bus or a traditional tram.

2. Praia de Carcavelos

This is the largest beach in Estoril, and it is often chosen to host volleyball and beach soccer championships. It's framed by the São Julião da Barra fort and it is very busy in the summer, due to the proximity to Lisbon, as well as the easy access. In winter, it is popular among surfers because it has good conditions for the practice of this sport. Enjoy a drink in the bars and terraces that are located next to the beach.

3. Praia de Galapos

Situated in the middle of Serra da Arrábida, Galapos beach is paradise on earth, with its beautiful clear water surrounded by white sand. The water is so crystal clear and calm, that you can see the bottom of the sea, which makes this beach an ideal one for scuba diving or spearfishing.

4. Costa da Caparica

Costa da Caparica and its beaches used to be mainly a fishing site. With the construction of the 25th of April bridge, though, because of the easy access to these paradisiac retreats, they became quite popular among Lisboners. This still holds true and the Caparica coast line is usually very crowded in the summer. There are many beaches to choose from and the further from the city, the more unspoilt they are.
